MAYA

Up close, Timy didn’t look all that much like me. She had dark hair and pale skin; my hair was black and skin nearly white. We had different faces, eyes, we carried ourselves differently. In her eyes there was a fire, though, and I carried one inside too. Hers was real, red and hot. The fire inside me was blue and frosty, and now that it finally could consume Freya, it subsided.

“We’re going there,” Timy said, her voice hoarse now. I flinched slightly at the sound of her voice, any voice, in this huge, open space, rocks under our feet, rocks around us. I had forgotten we were supposed to go anywhere, the image of my own hands holding thin wire as I approached snoring Magni… “This place is why I told you everything.”

I followed her finger. Except for a mountain on the horizon, all I could see was blank space, unless she meant a specific rock.

“The mountain,” Timy confirmed. “The place where we emerged when we entered the hollow. The other end of the corridor.”

“It’s far,” I said weakly.

“You are the Goddess. I am not even your apprentice. All I told you took place while you were…asleep. Yes, you rested for a very long time, but you have proven beyond any doubt that you can’t be caged. You are awake now. All you need is…” Timy paused. “As if you needed my guidance!” Her chuckle was forced and tense.

“I’m quite stiff from all this sitting,” I mumbled. “Why don’t we take a walk?”

“I would be honoured if you could take me there, Your Grace.” Timy faked a very good smile. I almost nodded in approval. She must have trained it for a while. If I didn’t know Freya so well, I’d even think it genuine. Timy waited, the smile unwavering. Unfortunately, there was the Festival coming in some hours, and unless I decided to open up, we’d stand like this until she got face cramps.

“So, um… the thing is…” I found myself afraid of disappointing her. “So, um…” I said that already. “The thing is, I know how to get anywhere. Like this mountain. We won’t get lost as we walk. I can’t fly, though, or whatever it is Khari does… what did you do back then, the first time? With Elias?”

“I hated,” Timy simply answered. “And I loved.” She gestured towards the mountain. “So…you can’t just…?”

I could only shake my head, ashamed. “I’m new at being a Goddess.” Timy’s laughter died out almost immediately when she realised I wasn’t joking. “You grabbed and held him?”

“It was as I told you. I took a leap, grabbed him, took another leap. I’m not large and strong, but Elias wasn’t either. His strength was his mind. He…died in an accident of his own making, when he tried to go one step foo far. To protect the Folk.” Timy sniffled. “Elias was the greatest man I’ve ever met.”

I tried to estimate the distance between us and the mountain. A full day of walking should about do it.
